Dark Energy

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Shakespeare, Hamlet Act 1 scene 5.

Back in 1998 Saul Perlmutter and Brian P.Schmidt discovered through the observations of type 1a Supernovae that the universe was expanding faster then it should be . This was a mind boggling discovery. What was the dark repulsive force that was able to increase the expansion rate of the universe? Michael Turner called it Dark Energy and scientists were able to determine that it accounts for around 73% of the total mass of the universe, 23% consists of something else we have no idea of called Dark matter, in fact everything we see , stars , planets, galaxies and people only account for 4% of the total mass of the universe, thats mind boggling. We don't know a whole lot about the make up of either dark energy or dark matter, we know that it isn't made up of the Baryonic matter, we and everything else we see is, and is only detected through the observations and effects it has on the Baryonic matter around it. If you think about it, your probably being bombarded right now with all kinds of non-baryonic matter
as your walking to the store, driving to work, non-baryonic matter is all around you.

As it stands right now there are 3 possibilities of a dark energy universe. as my above diagram shows.

1."The big crunch", the universe implodes or colapses.

2."Indefinite expansion"

3. "Big rip", dark energy becomes unstabilized and rips everything apart and we all become unglued.

I vote for number 2.

I guess we'd have to vote for number 2, lol. The other two don't bear thinking about. Well, they do bear thinking about as it would be interesting to surmise about what would happen and how, but you know what I mean.

Hey, we got about 30 billion years before we have to worry about becomming unglued.

This is good stuff to know Bob. Anna :) I keep this in mind, just sad that I will not be able to see the future.

Thanks Anna.

This is very informative. I have to keep this in mind. Thanks for the information

Thanks for the comments lovelyn and franx budi.

If I’m not mistaken, current observations suggest that the universe is not just expanding - it’s doing so at an accelerated rate. Doesn’t that rule out the big crunch scenario?

Bob Johnson said...

uri kalish; wow, you noticed, I didn't want to get in too much depth but in quantum theory some scientists believe that dark energy will eventully reach 0 and actualy become negative and then plunge as far as minus infinity therefore the collapse.

Uri Kalish said...

…Dark energy going to minus infinity? I guess in this new field you can say anything and get away with it. Sometimes it seems like there is a negative correlation between someone’s success as a quantum scientist and his mental health.

Yea, these guys are working on a different brane then us, they're developing and coming up with all kinds of words and theories on a daily basis, Who's to say whats right, not I

Bob and Uri, you guys do the discussion, I'll do the reading, though I don't quite understand what the experts are discussing...

zunner, I dont't even think they know what their talking about half the time, minus infinity, wow they probably just made it up, lol

I tend to be an independent thinker, and I say the Universe, just as any other entity, 'grows' by the process of 'inhaling' and 'exhaling'. Holistically these are the dual polarities that we see and experience everyday i.e. light-dark, male-female, implosive-explosive, yin-yang, etc. I posted it on my blog 'parallel dimension and ideal future' and called it my "Rocket's Theory"

That would really need some views about gravity, but I also had mine and I say "Consciousness is the source of gravity", calling it one of my 'rocket's philosophy' :) and posted at my blog.
