Venus, Jupiter conjunction January 31, 2008
Don't wanna seem like a braggy Bob, but I got a some real cool pics of the Venus , Jupiter conjunction. The weather co-operated apart from it being -30c, the camera still working at those temps, just amazing. Took an image the day before and the day of to show Jupiter's dance with Venus. If you missed the conjunction you can still see them close together and the Moon joining the gathering on Sunday February 3rd. early morning around 8am EST.
Conjunctions are fun, everyone can enjoy them, just walk outside your house to view the gems in the sky, no equipment required. Some upcoming conjunctions are,
1. February 27, Venus and Mercury; dawn sky.
2. March 24, Venus and Mercury again; dawn sky.
3. September 11, Venus and Mars; dusk.
4. December 31, Jupiter and Mercury; dusk.
After a 2 month delay Shuttle Atlantis is set to launch Thursday February 7th. at 2:45 EST, that is as long as a bent hose for the Shuttle's radiator cooling system checks out okay. Shuttle Atlantis's main mission is to deliver and install the ESA's Columbus laboratory, if you can, check out NASA TV , they have cameras everywhere during the launch, very cool to watch.
Haven't had an animated GIF which seems like forerver, so I'll leave you with what I like to call "Moonset over water", I took this image a couple weeks ago with the Canon 40D.

Thank you so much for posting those! The weather hasn't permitted us to see the morning sky in days here in snowy/rainy Ohio.
-30c???..What are you nuts??..Whats that in real temps (F).....How close to the North Pole is Saskatoon anyway?...I'll have to Google it.....Temps today
in Florida mid 70s,, just thought
I'd let you know,, that some places
on Earth don't have snow,, or polar bears..........
Hi tzt, I was very lucky I got 2 days clear in the morning, hoping for clear skies tomorrow to get the Moon in the image, so I know how you feel, usually cloudy and snowy here. Glad I was able to post the images for people like yourselves who didn't get a chance to view it live.
Lol gt281, we don't bother translating it anymore here in Saskatchewan, we just know it's stupid cold.
Hi Bob! I love how I hear in passing about something going on above us and think, "I'll have to stop by Blackholes and Astrostuff" to get more detail. You never let us down! Usually like with this Venus and Jupiter it is right here in a post. Sometimes I have to ask a question, but the answer is always forthcoming. Thanks!
We have not had a clear night here in 2 weeks, so I have not seen this yet. At least it is not -22F here. We think it is cold at +22!
-Will
Hey Will, I would love to get those temps here, maybe in a few months, lol.
The conjunction photos are AWESOME, Bob!!! I'm going to catch it tomorrow morning. Hope it's not cloud cover. I wonder what the ancients thought when they saw sights like this! So glad you captured images of it while I slept through. Probably with a cat purring on my head.
The Moonset over Water is lovely. Such deep rich colors.
I always keep my fingers crossed when the shuttle goes up.
Hugs, JJ
Wow Bob! Those pictures are so cool! Why not be a braggy Bob? You've certainly got something to brag about!!
Wow, that's really cool.
Thanks JJ!! Here's hoping the weather holds out for you, I'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us,lol.
Thanks Shirley! I think they are pretty cool, so glad I was able to take the pics at all because of the weather lately.
Thanks oswegan!
Good job!!.We clouded over and I missed the event :( .
Hi Braggy Bob :)
(That blogger name must be taken….)
-30! MINUS THIRTEY! Bob are you a muskox or something?
Have you ever thought that your hobby may be more…comfortable in the South Pacific? LOL
“Gems in the sky” nice line.
When you said “2 month delay” I thought it was going to be about Microsoft again!
The time for the launch sounds great, I won’t have to miss Survivor!
Bob, another outrageous gif! Head shaking, wow….
Bob:
Like the post. And thanks a bunch for the schedule of upcoming conjunctions. I put those babies right into my calendar. Nice photography also - clear, crisp images.
Shuttle launches are still exciting to me. When I was younger I just couldn't understand why they just didn't fly the shuttle all the way to the moon. I mean, what's the big deal? They can load the cargo with fuel, and there they go - fly in style.
Is it my imagination, or do you have much prettier images of the moon in Canada than we do down here in California? What a nice shot. It looks especially good with the water reflection GIF.
Keep up the good work.
Hey thanks for the update, I missed it today but hopefully I will be able to get up tomorrow and get a glimpse and maybe a picture of the cosmic meeting.
The Fool
Hi Andrew, thanks, too bad you missed it, still tomorrow.
Lol, livingsword, too funny, I would love to live in Egypt or Israel, so much history over there and places to see, and warmer climate. Looking forward to Survivor as well, Yau-Man is going to win this one.
Thanks swubird, Must be the crisp cold air that gives us northerners the cool looking Moon, lol.
Hey the fool, too bad you missed it so far but there is always Sunday, right now it's clear and cold here but that can change in a few hours.
Hi! Bob. Love the images. As for that top one, are those two short dark dashes flying saucers?
Regards
Peter
Thanks Peter!, click on the image, I think the short dark dashes you speak of, are the typing for the planets, if you don't click on the image they look like black dashes.
As usual Bob your GIF's are quite extraordinary. Love them. And thanks for the info on those planet conjunctions; however, we haven't had much luck with clear skies around here lately. Too much snow and freezing rain. I'll mark those other planet configurations in my calender and keep my fingers crossed.
Take care.
~JD
Thanks JD, I was lucky I got what I got, went out this morning to check out the Moon,Venus,Jupiter conjunction no luck, clouded over with snow just before the show.
Just some awesome shots Bob!!! Very cool GIF, GIMP has a wave effect but is more like a drip ripple than smooth waves like that.
Hi Roger, thanks!
Wow, your site is awsome. I just love it. Come by my site I have something for you.
Love and Blessings,
AngelBaby
Thanks AngelBaby! I always appreciate your feedback and all the awards.
Hi Bob, looks like you have a name for yourself for every post, spy Bob, braggy Bob, lol, you are funny. Thanks for sharing about the conjunctions. I think I might have seen one too, and now I know what they are. BTW nice gif image, this one is mysterious. Thanks for sharing, and glad that you are enjoying your 40D camera. Anna :)
Hi Bob,
I am astounded at how much I do not know about the sky which I've lived under for the past 44 years. I think this says much about the lifestyles of modern humans who have many more diversions to keep their eyes focused on the mundane and ultimately unimportant aspects of the world and wander away from the spectacular views of heaven. You've displayed heaven in the form of Venus and Jupiter in these brilliant photos. Your talent for teaching and photography is apparent, and that is why I am addicted to this blog. A conjunction? I thought that was a grammar term. Now, I've learned something new and remarkable. Go ahead and brag, Braggy Bob. You've earned that right. I'm with you all the way. -Mike.
Thanks Anna, boy am I ever enjoying the 40D, gives me the ability to do astronomy even at -30c. Everything works with Bob, if I had a name like Patrick, spy Patrick doesn't work, or Leonard, braggy Leonard, don't work, lol.
Thanks Mike, your right , everyone is busy, thats why I do the blog, so people can get a little taste of what's out there for the average person without breaking your brain, so glad you like it.
Bob:
Check my response your your comment on my site.
Thanks swubird, very cool.
Wow Bob you got the right name then. Glad that your camera works in those low temps. I think for me is the lens issue, the 100-400mm is actually heavy lens, so may be this is why I loose connection, but then now that I think about it, may be its manufacturing defect, lol, but still works. Since I am here, I think Peter the Scruffyhippo is not going to blog anymore, hope he got well after all - I am planning to clean up my links, so you know I think it will be okay to remove him. Anna :)
Hi Anna, probably a weight issue, in the cold it would definitely contract and the weight would do the rest. I hope Peter is going to be okay, if he comes back you could always re-add him, I am going to go through my links too probably remove a few that haven't updated for a few months.
Swinging by to wish you a lovely day!!!
Hugs, JJ
Hi! Got your message. Silly me! In regards to the replacement space shuttle, do you have any images that reveal the new design or have any information as to when they will roll it out?
Regards,
Peter
Hey Peter, couldn't resist, lol, are you planning trip to Venus? - lol, Anna :)
Bob
Just a heads up. You have been presented with one of those awards at my site, on my latest post. Feel free to come over for some hot coffee to warm up.
~JD
Thanks JJ, you have a great day too!
Hey Peter, no new shuttle, just a new lauch after repeated delays, launch date Thursday at 2:45pm EST.
Anna, Lol!
Thanks JD! be over later.
Hi Bob - the moon looks really spooky with the trees under it! Good capture!
Hey Kathy, thanks!
Hi! Bob, thank you for the feedback and Anna, Pluto sounds far better as I prefer cool places.
All the best!
Peter
Thanks Bob, and lol Peter. I think if you wait long enough we will get rock and ice here on Earth soon, lol, or just move to Canada I bet it is cheaper. Thanks for the response, and I think you know that Pluto used to be a planet, lol, funny nothing changed on the surface - still the same object, lol, just our classification methodology. Anna :) :) :)
Hi! Sorry to carry on a conversation behind your back Bob, but I couldn't help myself.
So Anna, you think Pluto used to be a planet, well I used to be young! Unfortunately things have changed on my surface but I'm still the same person deep down in side.
All the best!
Peter
Ha ha Peter, you are funny, thanks for the reminder, but because I don't know you in person, and the way you behave on blogs, lol, I think you are young, then let the Pluto be a planet too, lol. Just kidding, and I better go before Bob will kicks us out. Anna :)
Kids Kids settle down, lol, oh and don't get me started about pluto , boy when I was a kid we knew what was a planet and what wasn't,lol.
Missed this one. I overslept on the first day and it was cloudy on the other mornings. Will try to gte the others.
Btw 22C appeals to me more than -22C, though -22C may be better than -44C
Hey max-e, I was out this morning at 7am -45c with wind, taking a pic of Venus and Jupiter, though they are getting further apart, they are still beautiful.
Great pictures, I was looking for pictures of the conjunctions. I think I will subscribe
Thanks sherer, glad you were able to find what you were looking for!!
