Daytime Moon and Zodiacal Light

Wife: Whatcha up to?

Me: Looking at a daytime crescent Moon...just above that tree over there..see it?

Wife: .......No.

Me: Okay, look at the top of that pine over there and then a little to the left...see it?

Wife: .......No.

Me: Alright watch where I'm pointing, the Moon is sitting on top of my finger....see it?

Wife: .........If I say yes will you stop?

This conversation actually took place, the daytime crescent Moon can be a hard target to find but boy is it worth it, looks so majestic in the daytime.

If you're interested you can go here to see the current phase of the Moon and go here to find out where it is. I eventually set up the telescope and took some images for her to see later, which I don't think she did, but hey if she reads the post she will.

Just a reminder, in the early morning hours of this coming Thursday the Moon and Pleiades will be in conjunction, but you can enjoy the coupling late Wednesday evening, just grab some binocs, find the Moon then just off to the left will be the Pleiades, granted you won't have me to point them out to you but you should be good to go on your own.

Zodiacal Light ..credit The Worlds Of David Darling

Mark September 16th. on your calender for an awesome showing of the Slim Crescent Moon, Venus, and...and, the Zodiacal Light, triple whammy. The Zodiacal light will be putting on quite the show for a few days beyond the 16th., until the Moon gets brighter and takes away it's cool soft glow.

First you have to get up a couple hours before Sunrise, leave the glare of the city lights, and look to the east. You will see a faint triangle of light rising up from the horizon, very beautiful. The Zodiacal light is the result of Sunlight reflecting off dust particles left behind by comets and collisions between asteroids, best seen the beginning of fall before Sunrise in the east and spring after Sunset in the west. You may or may not know that the Zodiacal light is responsible for 60% of the skylight on a moonless night.

I'll leave you now with an animation of a Sunset I took a week ago.

Fabulous shots again, Bob! And thanks so much for visiting my blog again as well as posting these great links here! :-)

LOL - I've said it before ... but I really like your wife! hahaha

Bob's wife is cool. He always has a funny story to tell about something funny going on with them. I especially like his Venus story. If you get the chance, ask him about it. It's a classic!

Anyway, great shots Bob. Was that your through your scope, or just zoom lens, or Galileoscope? I saw a really cool Moon on the way up north this weekend, but alas, didn't have the right lens with me. I only took my wide angle lens hoping to catch the Milky Way, naturally forgetting to check the Moon calendar. Lo and behold, the Moon was full and washed everything out. Then, it rained the other nights :(

Thanks for the info on the conjunction and Zodiacal lights. Maybe we can catch those together.

Lol thanks Anne, yes she is speaking to me again, she is pretty funny, cracked me up when she said that

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Stephanie, hey just take a little ride outside of town around 4 am, no biggy,lol.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Hey Cashmere, cool, happy early birthday.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Hey Drowsey Monkey, yeah, she's a real riot,lol.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Lol, I think I've killed those stories to death, even told your wife the other night, pretty funny though, maybe not at the time, but still funny. The Moon Shots are all with my Meade 200lxr.

Too bad about the weather but also about the lens, I always take a wide angle and telephoto no matter where I go, you just never know.

I was going to call you about both events, I'll be watching the Moon Pleiades all night, should be closest around 2 am.

The Zodiacal we'll have to go a few miles out of town around 4 am arrival looks to be pretty good as Venus and the Moon have just risen could be an excellent shot if we get a clear horizon, you'll need both telephoto and wide angle.\m/\m/

Bob:

Great shots. My Queen and I are always arguing over whether or not the moon is full. She usually argues that it's a full moon and I usually can see just a sliver shaved off the circumference. So now, in a typical wife way, she has placed a giant calendar on the counter top right next to the back door that shows all the phases of the moon. "Hey," I complained, "That's no fun. Real men use their naked eyeballs!" But she doesn't buy it.

Happy trails.

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks PJ, hopefully I'll get some images and tales for you.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

LOL swubird, love the fact your Queen is interested at least, I'm a guy, dont use maps, instructions or lunar calendars,lol.\m/\m/

Bob this sounds just like Walter and me having a conversation.

He is always trying to show me something in the sky and I can't see it.

Just a second ago after seeing this and us discussing it he began trying to explain what a Quasar is!!

I am hopeless Bob and grateful to have you and Walter help me understand these things!!

Thanks so much for dropping in and your lovely comment of support.

We are being very very cautious at this point. But, Friday the Dr.'S said 48 hours.

As of today after being put on a new antibiotic and a liquid diet she has started responding and getting better.

Today they lessened the medication so she can have more hours awake and she has a non restrictive menu diet!!

As I said we are being very cautious but at the same time we do beleive in miracles!!

Some things just can't be explained by DR.'S. So even while cautious, things certainly seem to have turned for the better!!

Love your shots as always!!
Jackie:-)

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Susanne, glad you like the images of the Moon, I tend to go on and on unless she says short version or stop,lol.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Jackie, cool you were talking about Quasars with Walter, you are talking some deep astronomy stuff there. Thanks for sharing the update Jackie that is good news and like you said miracles do happen, lets pray this is one, keep the faith!\m/\m/

I love it when you share conversations with your wife.

Sadly our hot tub is broken, which means our night sky viewing is close to nil. I don't know when we can get it fixed. :( But I'll try to get out on the 16th anyway.

You know me and daytime moon viewings. I always call it a filmy petal at the side of the sky.

Hi Bob!

Oh that conversation with your wife and your remark about her reading your blog was funny. Most spouses of bloggers I know don't read their stuff much, in fact, they think that this whole blog thing is weird. :D

You said that 60% of light on a moonless sky is... wait... there is light on moonless sky other than the light from stars? You must tell us more! :D

More things to look forward to. I'll have to see if I can see the sky, however do you think it will be visible from Florida?

When my children were little and they saw the moon out during the day. They asked me why the moon was still out and I told them it forgot to go to bed! LOL! I love seeing the moon during the day and it does happen sometimes here in California. It is really cool to see it. Thanks for sharing this.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Your daylight moon is most beautiful, Bob. I never know about the Zodiacal Light. Will have to see if we can find it.

Hey Bob I had the same conversation with my husband and Matthew few days ago, the only problem in my conversation, lol, was that they really didn't see it as they were standing where the house was obstructing the view, funny it was only few feet away and can make a such a difference. Your images are surreal Bob, the daylight moon is amazing, not to mention your animations. I still don't know why your sun always looks better, lol.... Anna :)

Hey Bob :D!

LOL LOL loved the dialogue! LOL

I love day time crescent moons: I can spot them very easily and I find them mysterious!

Zodiacal light? I have never seen one (I think)...but I will try!

Awww, such a gorgeous sunset! I love sunsets, Bob (and I have been fortunate enough to witness some in several different countries; being the African ones simply splendid!!!)!

I adored this post: so uplifting and informative (as always) :)!

Have a great week ahead, my friend!

Cheers

Now, "Where did I leave my keys honey? A: Not again!

The Zodiacal light sounds cool. Unfortunately directly east of us is the town of Medford. So I am out of luck unless I get up even earlier and drive a ways to get a better view.

Those shots of the crescent moon are terrific! I thought I read somewhere recently that if you know where to look, sometimes you can see the daytime new moon?

Love the day time crescent Moon…and the conversation with your wife…a lovely long suffering lady LOL

It looks like you have not posted at your regular times…hmmm I hope everything is ok…if not then it seems trivial of me to invite you to our latest season of fantasy hockey on our new blog:

http://vancouvercanucksfantasyhockey.blogspot.com/

Or for that matter to our season of Survivor Samoa…

Bob did you go to the Moon? Abducted by aliens…or something sad?

I never knew about Zodiacal light, but I have wondered in the past where the light in the sky came from, when out here in the woods on nights with no moon. Now I know! Thanks for the pointer.

I think it's time for you to start a magazine in real-time, Bob, for sky enthusiasts! You would do a great job with it. Or maybe a book for kids, to turn them on to all of this?

If you think YOUR conversation with your wife is humorous and predictable, you should hear some of ours.

I'll say "That was a fabulous, marvelous and beautiful hike we took this afternoon," and he'll say "I forgot to put in those new spark plugs." And so it goes....

Thank you for dropping the article. It was nice to interpret what namely you are up to, yet in common I won't have the same opinion with you seeing that I have got some judgements in my head. I suppose that this is entirely excluded to do in such a way provided that we're discussing everyday's life. Anyway, I would not stay on any of the suggesting you are providing.
