Moon

Ever since I can remember remembering about things I've been fascinated with all things Moon. From the first time I looked up in the sky at the Moon through the telescope my Dad bought me when I was a kid to taking images like the one above, a daytime waxing gibbous Moon, waxing just means the Moon going from New Moon to Full Moon phase, gibbous means the Moon is more then half illuminated but not full.

I'm always looking for ways to rediscover it, enter "Moon" movie.

Due for limited release June 12 this awesome indie movie, directed by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones and staring Sam Rockwell takes us to the Moon where Sam Bell (played by Sam Rockwell) is in the last days of his 3 year mission mining for Helium-3 when Sam gets into some kind of freak accident that finds Sam beside himself... literally, hint Solaris.

What is Helium-3 you might ask, well it is a very rare non-radioactive isotope sought after as a second generation fusion power source, very rare on Earth but thought to be in abundance on the Moon.

Now I have talked about Helium-3 before in one of my posts where I have purchased Lunar real estate, I stated that people were mocking me for buying property on the Moon but I would have the last laugh, well not me, I'll be dead but my great great grand kids will when NASA is negotiating with my great great grand kids for the mining rights to helium -3 on their property..... sure like NASA or the Chinese are going to be negotiating for mining rights from my descendants, that is unless my great great grand kids get there first, probably not going to happen.

A character driven movie it looks to be real good. Sam is not totally alone, he has "Gerty" a talking computer (Kevin Spacey) kind of like HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The sets look very cool, they used a combination of digital special effects and real live miniature models.

Duncan Jones sums up the movie and his thoughts behind it in an interview I found, and I quote; "My generation of geeks was a big fan of films like "Outland" and "Silent Running" and the original "Alien". Those kind of science fiction movies were more about the character and sort of human qualities than about the technology. I love those films and I miss those films in some ways, and we wanted to create something which felt comfortable within the canon of those science fiction films from the sort of late seventies to early eighties." I can hardly wait. I'll leave you now with the trailer.

A little... no a lot off topic, I went to see the latest incarnation of Star Trek and thought it was too cool, I also posted a YouTube video of it, too funny, I laughed till I stopped.

I also deeply and abidingly love the moon. I'm not sure how I feel about the trailer for Moon. It's dark and I'm not so much into the dark science fiction (though I can think of a dozen exceptions).

The clip is hilarious. You know, I know dozens of Trekkies and I haven't run into one yet that didn't like/love the movie. I might go see it again.

I like to sit in the window and stare at the moon. I wish that one day, they would let a cat walk on the moon.

Hi Stephanie, I saw your Moon painting on your blog, I would love an image of it, looks great. I watched the clip lots and laughed, like that kind of humor. I only know a couple of die hard fans they were okay with it but were concerned with the lack of boring board room scenes,lol\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks along2481 glad you could drop by.\m/\m/

Hi Daisy I love to stare at the Moon as does my cat, never say never, one day there may be a cat walking on the Moon as well.\m/\m/

Daisy and Bob,

I think if we can ever put a colony on the moon, having cats there will be a given.

(I have some more detail on my moon, Bob. I'm so bad. And I don't have the glow in the dark paint on it. But I WILL get you a picture)

Bob Johnson said...

Hi Stephanie, I'm sure there will be cats. Great about the Moon ,looking forward to some of your shots, looks real good so far.

Hi Bob...

Wow sounds very cool!

Hal...open the pod bay doors...

I have seen and/or own all of the sci-fi movies you mention...How about Space 1999? Favourite character?

As for the new Star Trek I read a fantastic review over at SOL 3 News:

I read about that battle for "ground" on the moon - hasn't the Bush family bought almost everything?
There are also theories that say the moon is a satellite and controlling us. Somehow most of the mythologies and stories also relate the moon to the evil.
Fascinated with our shadow - the dark side of the moon ... :-)

The moon photo is brilliant! I HAVE to get out with my camera at night. Call me very lazy - and forgetful.

I must say that Moon movie does look great. Think we might have to go see it when it's released.

Still haven't seen Star Trek - and we really want to before it's out of the theater. Maybe today!

Hey Bob

Loved the clips. I'll definitely check out the movie...I'm totally into dark sci-fi and Silent Running was an awesome movie.
The youtube news clip on the Trekkie fam reactions was absolutely hilarious and soooo true lol.
Hey these reviews are a great idea! Keep it up my friend.
Take care.

Can't wait to see the new Star Trek movie - your clip is a riot!

The moon is my "ruling planet" according to the horoscope charts - have always felt a kinship to it up there in the night sky.

betchai said...

I love staring at the moon and the stars too, however, I still have to learn a lot in how to take really good quality pictures of them like you do. I love the details in your moon picture.

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Livingsword, I love Space 1999, cool you should have thought of that, the models are very similar, I loved Maya. Thanks for the link I will check the review out.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Lol Anne about Bush owning everything.

There will be quite the battle for property rights I would assume coming up, we shall see how everything works out.

That is the cool thing about the Moon, so much conjecture about how it does have an effect on us and if there has been or still are bases and such there, very mysterious.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Ruth for noticing my Moon shot. I was so lucky there were faint clouds in between me and the Moon gave it a cool what I like to call ice cream effect on my focus.

You will really like Star Trek, best one yet hands down.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks JD, I love the dark sci fi as well, this one's a bonus with the Moon and excellent actor, should be good.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Hi Kathy, very cool about the Moon being your ruling planet, Star Trek rules as well, lol, you'll love it.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks betchai, we are so lucky to be able to have the Moon as our celestial partner in the heavens, I don't know what I do without it, probably die, lol, since it does help tilt us for the seasons.\m/\m/

I am not much of a trekky fan but my son and his boys are. I am sure they have gone to see the movie. My son even had a star trek t-shirt when he was little and I have the picture!

I do love the moon, there is just some thing about it that draws me in especially when it is a full moon.

Love and Blessings,

Heard about the "moon" before, the plot that Sam is to come across another himself on the moon is scary.

Lol Livingsword, hey she was a Good actress, that's my story an I'm sticking to it,lol.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Hey AngelBaby, cool you still have the picture of your son in the Star Trek t-shirt. I know what you mean about the Moon, there is just something about it that draws your attention, especially when it is full, we are so lucky to have it.\m/\m/

Good morning Dave, oops, I mean Good morning Bob! I'm having a HAL of a time Downunder, how about you?

Love my science fiction movies alright but still my mind takes me back to the 1970 TV series called "UFO", probably because of those sexy space woman and their colorful hair, not forgetting, being in my late teens, my racing hormones. Not so much now, of course! Too much information, I can hear you say!

Who can forget William Shatner! Having relations with aliens was never his problem and now that he's a bit older, having relations at his age in Boston Legal, just makes him a legend in his own time.

Re your China trip, don't forget about your medical insurance. Being caught out without it, can cost you an arm and a leg!

PS I here using Google Chrome, as IE wouldn't show the clips, but not to worry!

Live Long and Prosper

Hey Bob,

I think you do well to keep the moon material for your great great grand-kids: they'll make a fortune.

"that is unless my great great grand kids get there first, probably not going to happen." - we never know, man...we never know.

Ha...I remember 2001: A Space Odyssey! I used to watch it every week - we are in 2009 and still nothing is happening (as in the series, I mean).

Whoa...I watched all "Alien" movies...all of them: loved it!!

Duncan Jones is right, in the past this type of movies was much much better because it relied on human stories (and qualities, making them feel real) rather than FX. But now...the amount of FX is so high that the movies do not seem real.

I am also curious about the latest Star Trek...but many are disappointed...hey, Captain Kurt is having sex now...talking about real stuff lol.

Cheers

Hey Bob:

Great pictures. I'm with JD. I remember Silent Running with Bruce Dern. It's one of my all time favorite science fiction films. This movie you're talking sounds and looks like a cross between Silent Running and 2001. A win win.

Happy trails.

Thanks for dropping by Mary.\m/\m/

Lol Peter, hey I loved UFO and actually did a post on it, I picked up all the shows on DVD last year, loved the ladies and their purple hair, lol. I have med insurance through work and got all my shots, just waiting for my China entrance VISA then good to go.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Lol Max, Kirk was is still is the ladies man, lol.

I'm surprised you've seen all the Alien movies, Max, I'm very impressed, I think I've seen them about a gazillion times, love them, especially the soundtrack for the first couple, very haunting and distinctive music.

You gotta see the new Star Trek Max it's awesome. have a great week!!\m/\m/

Hi swubird, you hit the nail on the head there with the comparison to Silent Running and 2001, I think it's going to be a cult classic.\m/\m/

Bob, now you got me interested in Lunar real estate. Who owns the moon that you can buy a piece of it from? I've never heard of such a thing so I'm beginning to think that you are pulling my leg... :o)

I guess I have to read up on your previous post about it.

Hi Ivanhoe, it is very cool and easy to own a piece of the Moon, just read the post I referred you too, over 400,000 people can say they own a piece of the Moon, even celebrities and NASA employees, it's the new real estate,lol.\m/\m/

Hey Bob, the photo of your Moon is awesome and i loved it :)
And my love for the Moon started while I was still a baby. My parents were wondering why I wasn't crying at night as most babies do, and they found out that I was staring at the Moon while having my tongue between my lips :))

And i think your move in buying a piece of the Moon was really smart, and no matter if you'll get rich from it or not, or your grand-grand kids. If I could - would buy it too ;)

As for the StarTrek clip - very funny and I will watch it this weekend for the 1st time, and yes, I know - kind of late really, but better late than never...

Hi Bob,
Very interesting movie, I might watch it. I know at the end its probably some makes-no-sense story but should be entertaining anyway!
You are a visionary! LOL, planning so much in advance for that piece of Lunar estate!

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Tatiana, too cool about you watching the Moon instead of crying, very smart kid, seems the Moon has touched you as well.

You'll love Star Trek, I'll probably go out again and watch maybe 2 or 3 times more,lol.\m/\m/

Lol, thanks Priyank, like your phrase "it's some probably makes no sense story" I hear you, but they are usually entertaining also like you said, 2001 was kind of like that, I'm still not 100% sure what the hell went on,lol.\m/\m/

I saw the new Star Trek movie twice and it was awesome each time. They did a fantastic job.

Can't wait for the new Moon movie! I love Sam Rockwell, it should be awesome. Love Kevin Spacey in sci-fi, always. K-Pax rocked! Thanks for bringing the movie to our attention! It would have totally snuck up on me otherwise.

Can't explain my moon connection, but have been watching it with deep fascination my whole life. I even dream about that big ol' hunk of desolate rock. I usually dream there's two of them!

Bob Johnson said...

Hi Genie, I'm going to go again, I really liked it too.

Me too, I like Rockwell, I remember you telling me about your 2 Moons before, very interesting,I dream a lot about it getting close and looking real big,lol.\m/\m/
