Journey To The Edge Of The Universe and more Conjunction Images

Geysers on Triton;

and Black holes in action;

bright colored matter;

and Solar attractions;

Nebulae, galaxies, stars in between, these are a few of my favorite things, bet you'll never guess which movie I was watching the other day. Anyways back on topic, you get to see all my favs above and more on the 2 hour premiere of "Journey to the Edge of the Universe" on the National Geographic Channel.

Very cool how through cinema quality CGI and the worlds best telescopes they take you from a couple people enjoying the night sky up through the atmosphere, to the Moon, Sun, planets then galaxies and beyond to the edge of the universe, all in one camera move.

Be prepared to board "spacecraft imagination", launch date this Sunday December 7, 7 pm EST.

Again the Canadian times are yet to be announced, will let you know as soon as I hear.

Well, the last couple of weeks have been space crazy around here, first with our famous Saskatchewan meteor, which by the way they have found quite a few pieces of , to the beautiful Venus, Jupiter Lunar conjunction, imaged and viewed by millions of people all over the world, everybody was getting involved, even my wife, as I was coming home after imaging the gathering she said "I saw your cute little conjunction!"........boy........, if I had a nickel every time I heard that.

The beautiful image above of the conjunction was taken by Genie, great job Genie! When there are special celestial occasions I will post any and all images from you the readers on my blog, and issue a free pair of Hanna Montana/ Miley Cyrus 3D glasses, while supplies last. My goal has always been to get people involved in and to enjoy the cosmos, and my new goal to one day have everybody outfitted with said 3D glasses. The upcoming Jupiter, Mercury and Lunar conjunction December 28/29, not as spectacular as the one that just occurred but it will more beautiful in it's subtlety, has Mercury in it, I love Mercury, always a challenge to view and even more difficult to image, the Moon will be a very small crescent making it all the more reason to try and catch it. For the conjunction look low in the SW just after Sunset on the 28/29. Also the Geminid meteor shower peaks next weekend, look to the east around 10:00 pm for the show to start, will be a Full Moon so won't see the maximum of 60 meteors per hour but again still worth a look.

The above image was taken by Anita with a Finepix S700 camera, great shot Anita! A pair of 3D glasses are on their merry way to you and yours.

Raymond, took the above image, super job!! hope you Genie and Anita enjoy your new 3D glasses, to break em in, try this cool NASA 3D image site.

I'll leave you now with a preview clip of Journey to the Edge of the Universe.

Thanks for the heads up on the meteor shower next weekend. I'll be out there trying to catch a glimpse in spite of the full moon.

I really wish we got the NG channel - looks like you are in for some beautiful images. Love the geyser shot.

These images are stunning!

I'm so excited about the Saskatchewan meteor fragments! And how great that the biggest chunk so far was found by a boy and his dad out looking for exactly what they found. I wonder how long before the fragments are for sale on Ebay!!!

Thanks for showing my humble conjunction photo! I like Raymond's photo because my favorite way to see the moon is when it's low on the horizon and gold/platinum in color.

Keep up the good work, Bob, of increasing awareness of all things celestial in the most positive, friendly, and proficient way!

Well thank you very much notedscholar.

Bob Johnson said...

No problem Susanne, glad you like the post, hope you can catch the show.

Bob Johnson said...

You're welcome CJ, there will still be meteors to view, I will be out for a few nights, weekend, best times are 2-5 am.

Bob Johnson said...

Too bad you don't get the channel Kathy, they have had some great shows lately.

Bob Johnson said...

They are pretty cool roentarre.

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Genie, you took some great shots, lol about Ebay, just because I was thinking the exact same thing, I've gotten some great deals there, got a 25mg Mars meteor for only 45 bucks, I'll be posting a video and pics of it soon.

Genie said...

Oh my goodness, Bob! You need to hook up with Daniel Sroka (http://blog.danielsroka.com/), he specializes in macro photography--bet he could do some amazing stuff with your shiny new 25mg. Mars meteor! Not that your macro videos of your other meteors aren't masterpieces, of course.

Can't wait to get my 3D shades, they'll be useless for me and my odd eyes but hubby will love pouring over the 3D Mars photos with them! Finally, after all this time, I have some awesome stuff to show for all my time blogging. "In The Shadow of the Moon" and a pair of Hannah Montana 3D glasses, woot, life is good!!!!!!!!

You need to check out my friend, Anita's picture of the conjuction...

I'm sure she'd love some 3D glasses if you let her know they're free. :)

Bob:

First of all, are you going meteor hunting for your share of the Saskatchewan meteorite? Get over there and find yourself a piece.

Second, I love the pictures, especially the geysers of Triton. Very dramatic. Something tells me that someday we're going to find some strange things on that little moon. I just hope I'll be around to see them.

Great post, Bob. I'll keep my eyes balls peeled for the TV show.

Happy stargazing.

Bob Johnson said...

Lol, that's great , hey did you watch the movie yet? I went to Daniel's site, thanks for the link, looks good, does he do house calls?,lol, your glasses should be there any day now.

Bob Johnson said...

Wow, thanks for the heads up Moonshadow, I left her a comment, asking if she wanted me to post her image to leave me a comment, get a free pair of glasses.

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks swubird, I don't even think the average person is allowed around the fall site otherwise I'd be there.

I don't think I'm even going to be around for the return to the Moon, with all the cutbacks, the Mars Science Lab Rover just got cut back 2 more years, shape of things to come.

Looking forward to that NG show! But I'll have to wait until it comes online--I (happily) killed my TV a couple years ago, so have to find specific things online I want to see.

As always, great photos and links!

Oh, and the: "she said 'I saw your cute little conjunction!'........boy........, if I had a nickel every time I heard that." had me rolling in the floor.

Bob Johnson said...

Lol, and thanks Majase Cyc, wow sucks about your TV, how do you manage?,lol, the good thing is there are all kinds of great programs for free on the net and growing.\m/\m/

I like all the photos but the one that strikes me right now is the one by Anita…it is amazing how she captured Santa on his test run…

Another great, informative post as always! It is amazing the pieces of that meteor that have been found. I wonder how much the 25 pound piece is worth?

That geyser photo is beautiful. I wonder what makes the end of it look like a Fiddlehead fern? I also wonder how far out from Triton that is shooting?

I seem to be doing a whole lot of wondering today thanks to you! lol.

Very impressive images, Bob. I loooove visiting here to see what you have found in the skies. You are quite AMAZING and a BLESSING to bloggers.

Woot!!! that they found parts of that meteor. I wish you would have found some of it. :D

Cheers! JJ

Amazing photos! There is something about space photos that make me feel so small and insignificant...

Bob Johnson said...

No problem Anita, I'm sure you will make good use of them.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Will, once they get it analyzed they will know what it is worth, also how much they find will determine a cost, by the look of it it is probably some type of iron based meteorite, not from the Moon or Mars, counting the days when some of it finds it's way to Ebay,lol.

Will I read it some where that the Geysers are around 7 miles high, forget where, probably in either Sky and Telescope or Astronomy mag.

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks JJ, maybe when it all dies down next spring I might make a visit out there to talk to the owner, you never ever find all of a fall.
