National Geographic Mars Rovers Special

Just a heads up people, mark your calendars and get the popcorn going for this Sunday night November 2 at 8:00 pm ET for three hours of Mars, the Rovers and the search for aliens on The National Geographic Channel.

The premier of Five Years On Mars gets things rolling. Journey with the little rovers Spirit and Opportunity on what was to be a 90 day mission on the red planet that has now lasted nearly 5 years. Using computer generated high-definition photorealistic animation you'll see how the rovers conquered mechanical failures and the harsh Martian environment to send back literally 100s of thousands of images and enough scientific data to keep scientists busy back here on Earth for years to come.

Very cool, right near the beginning of the show it cuts to a scene of a bunch of scientists all wearing 3D glasses looking over some assembled 3D images taken by the rovers. Well anybody that has read this blog will know that I am one with all things 3D, ........ I so want a job where I have to wear 3D glasses, I can't imagine... well maybe a little.

Intercom system: "ATTENTION! ATTENTION! would Bob Johnson please report to the 3D mission room and bring your 3D glasses with you, there is a lot of 3D scientifical discoveries to be made that will benefit all humankind and we need your expertise and 3D glasses, thank you.... and have a nice day".

Immediately following Five Years on Mars will be an encore showing of Life On Mars, then the premier of Calling All Aliens, about how we are reaching out to the heavens in hopes of one day making alien contact, speaking of which do you remember Jodie Foster in the movie Contact?
well you'll meet the lady her character was based on, Jill Tarter the director of the Allen Telescope Array.

Partially funded by Paul Allen co-founder of Microsoft, the Allen Telescope Array is used by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI), 24/7 to collect and monitor datastreams from outer space to see if anyone not of this Earth is trying to make contact.

All in all a great night with 3 awesome programs you won't want to miss. Right now the Canadian dates and times aren't confirmed, once I find out I will update this post.

Also as you're out Halloweening tomorrow night with the kiddies or just out by yourself, look low in the SW just after Sunset for a beautiful gathering of the crescent Moon and Venus.

I'll leave you now with an animation of the Full Moon and clouds.

No fair! We don't have cable. Maybe it will eventually end up on the Internet and then I can watch it.

Hey Bob, guys were seeing stars at the event I was at a couple weeks ago. Go on over to my blog and check out my pictures. :)

We don't have cable so that is a bummer - will check out what the NG website has to offer though.

Too funny with the 3D glasses - all this hi-tech sci-fi stuff and it all comes down to glasses - who would have thought!

Bob Johnson said...

Too bad Kathy about the cable, they do have a great web site though, I know you would like the special.\m/\m/

I'll have to see if we have National Geographic Channel. Looks like an interesting program.

Your intercom transmission made me laugh. We should all have 3D imaging rooms at our jobs. Would make work more fun.

Looks like an excellent program I will tape it! Also I love the movie contact that was outside the box.

Sorry I havent had time to read your latest entries, I was in Hawaii. Had some great times and even went up to mauna kea to look at the star - it was spectacular. Didn't get to look through the huge telescopes but they had some amazing telescopes setup for all to look through. The highlights included the Ring Nebula and one of the Jovian moons eclipsing the planet - TRUE AWESOME \m/

I'm still waiting to see the moon in the day sky. Hope I don't miss out on the contest. We had cloud cover for a few days.

Happy Halloween. Stop by my site for a boo! :D

Blessings! JJ

Thanks haleyhughes, every work space should have a 3D room, lol, hope you get the NGC, I watch it all the time, I would imagine they will be out on video eventually, or maybe even iTunes.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Hey Jesse good to hear from you again, that is so cool to be able to see the stars and the Ring nebula from those scopes at Mauna Kea and to see a transit of one of Jupiter's Moons would be awesome from there, glad you had a super time.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks JJ, you have some good days coming up, as the Moon's crescent is getting larger and pulling further away from the Sun, to night would be a good night , just after Sunset, then every day after that, I will be over later, very cool.\m/\m/

Well, we went into town for the exciting walk through the jack-o-lanterns last night, and as we pulled out of the driveway I made everyone look at the crescent moon and Venus - they were GORGEOUS! But alas, I have not mastered my Nikon for moon shots yet, and I also didn't want to ask my father-in-law to stop the car, so I didn't get a shot. I did get some okay ones of the jack-o-lanterns though. :dumb:

See how :dumb: I am?? :dumb:

I can't even leave an emoticon!

Lol Ruth, well at least you got to look at the beautiful combination, it's on again to night, this time the Moon will be higher and Venus will be below and to the right, oh, keep your jack o lantern pics for my next jack o lantern contest, lol.

Thanks for the heads up on the mars program Sunday. I try to catch all of those, but I get forgetful and miss a lot of good stuff.

Hey, that was a great water reflecting GIF. Images with gray in them seem to work out well.

Happy stargazing.

Thanks swubird, me too I have to write down notes to remind me, the clouds in the Moon pic happened just at the right time when light clouds were over the Moon, was able to over expose the image to bring out the clouds and not make the Moon look like a bright blob,lol.\m/\m/

Thanks z.equiano, I'll be over to take a look.

Bob, 3 hours of TV, I am lucky if I get to watch Arthur for three minutes with Matthew, lol. So you the 3D guy. I was looking at making 3D photos before blogging last year, but then I could not find my 3D glasses from my engingeering drafting set, so I gave up - well stupid reason, but that was it. Thanks for all the updates, looks like I am missing many things lately, lol....Anna :)
