To Cern With Love

A study called, " Review of the safety of LHC collisions" was just released stating not to worry , everything is going to be okay, we are not going to all be sucked into a black hole when the Large Hadron Collider goes live September 10. To sum it up in a nut shell, the report says we, we being the Earth and other astronomical bodies have been bombarded for billions of years by cosmic rays of far greater energies produced by the LHC and that the ongoing stability of Earth and other astronomical bodies indicates that such collisions cannot be dangerous.

I got a comment on my August 21 post from Jesse stating he was hoping the they are right about the evaporating black hole thing, I had replied stating that we are bombarded daily by cosmic rays of far greater energies that the LHC can produce and that the black holes they produce evaporate, and not to worry, famous last words?, we'll find out soon, I guess a good thing is , if the scientists and my posts are wrong there won't be any one around to tell us we told you so.

Hey while we're on the topic of life sucking black holes, The Center for Astrophysics has just released the coolest, closest image of the black hole at the center of our galaxy. By combining telescopes in Hawaii, Arizona and California they have come up with a winning combination that can detect structure at a tiny angular scale of 37 micro-arcseconds, or the equivalent to a baseball on the surface of the Moon!! Are you thinking what I'm thinking? probably not, my thought processes are a little off, but how cool would that be if they could now take images of the stuff left behind by the Apollo missions? put to rest once and for all whether or not we went there........ people , we did, this would be a way of proving that to all the naysayers.

The Large Hadron Collider has been getting a bad rap lately about the black hole thing and all, below is a good rap of the collider, very interesting and fun all at the same time, enjoy.

Bob, I've missed your terrific skies-and-space posts.

This too, was an interesting read.

We'd better hope they don't de-stabilize Earth's magnetic field or do some other dire unforseen thing that will send us into another orbit or worse yet, into a black hole. I have the deepest respect for science yet I know it can lead to discoveries that have unanticipated problems and consequences--read, the storage of nuclear waste, for example.

This summer we went boating and sat in the middle of the dark lake around 10:30 at night. We saw a million stars and the constellations, and the rising of a red moon and the shimmering path it spread across the water. And then a BRIGHT shooting star blazed its path across the night sky, amazing all of us in the boat, with its intensity. It was great! You would have loved it.

Hope you and your family are doing fine!

That is good to know, Bob. I had been planning to stay close to home on Wed, but now I won't worry!

And, you know Bob, even if they did photograph the stuff left behind, there would be some that would say the images were doctored.

Well Bob ... I'll hold you to your word on this. Hopefully everything will go well and your links have alleviate some of the worry I have about this test...some. But, I do agree with Lynda...science has been known to screw up in its zeal to push the envelope at times.
Like WIll, I think I'll stay home on Wednesday.
Take care my friend.

Mind boggling. Altho I was looking forward to that whole black hole ride.

Stunning shot. Fish eye lens?

Thanks Lynda, I'm sure everything will work out okay with the LHC.

Wow your boat trip sounded great, that's how the night sky is, all kinds of stuff going on all the time, that's why I love it.\m/\m/

Hey Will, I will just be going about my day, as for the Apollo stuff, you are right , there will always be people no matter what evidence you have will just be contrary, one of the things they are saying is why don't we take pics of the stuff on the Moon if it really did happen, and the astronomers say we can't, now it seems we can,so we had better, make sense,lol.\m/\m/

Hi JD, not to worry, everything is going to be just fine, like I told Will I'll just be about my regular business, I'm sure some problems will arise, but nothing of any dire consequence.\m/\m/

Lol, drowsey, sorry to disappoint.\m/\m/

Hi roentarre, looks like a fisheye of some sort.

Oh great Lord of the Astropics!

LOL Hey you! I am going to start by the great end: the rap!! Loved it!!! And plus it is so educational...I felt like a kid learning new stuff, and I confess that now I understand a bit better the whole thing...

Now, I was pleased to know that my "Equilibrium theory" may be a reality and extended to physics (which doesn't surprise me at all): I always say that since God is the Ultimate balance (since He has two opposite energies in Him), that everything He created has to have also its opposite so that Balance can prevail...
I had never thought of anti-matter, but after listening to the rap: it makes utter sense to me!

I will be looking forward to learn what is going to happen to on Sept. 10!! I wish us all luck! Aaah, I am sure that we are not going to be sucked LOL!

Great post, Bob!

Wishing you a great week, my friend...

Cheers

Bob,

Whew! My soul is prepared for anything! haha. It does, however, give me relief that we going to make it.

I read about that tri-effort telescopic combo - that is terrific! And could it work on close objects like our moon - or jupiter - maybe even get a better look at our "dwarf planet" friends? Also, what are the implications of looking closer to a black hole, can you see time slowing? Speeding up? Could you possibly see another dimension!?

That's the first piece of rap music I ever heard that I actually liked. And the Stephen Hawking voice was fabulous. Well done!

I'm not too worried about being sucked into a black hole, it's being spit out the other side that bothers me!

Another great post.

happy stargazing.

Fascinating photos and post, Bob!!! Jeff and I looove speculating about blackholes. I'm glad we aren't going anywhere.

Hugs, JJ

Lol, thanks max, I'm glad the video helped a little, we'll see if they can see what happens to the anti-matter, and I'm curious about where the graviton goes, might prove other dimensions, if we could only find out why gravity is so weak, maybe able to start to master gravity, then there is no stopping us,lol, you have a great week too max.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Hey Jesse, can't see other dimensions with the telescope, wrong equipment, I'm hopping that the LHC will show us the other dimensions, if they know the before mass and energies and the after mass and energies and there is a difference, could mean gravitons are slipping through to other dimensions, could be the reason gravity is so weak compared to the other forces.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks swubird, I hate rap too, but this did a great job of appealing to the masses with an important message.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks JJ, always fascinating to speculate about what a black hole really is and does, we should know more soon, very cool.\m/\m/

Bob you always post great stuff! Sorry I haven't been by crazy busy trying to catch up but a 100 steps behind! Have a great week man!!

Hi! It seems the Aussies have a finger in all sorts of scientific pies. This one as well as Aussie scientists have helped design and construct one of the huge detectors. If we're not here tomorrow, I'll know who to look for in hell!

Take Care,
Peter

Bob Johnson said...

Thanks Roger, hope your classes are going well.\m/\m/

Bob Johnson said...

Lol Peter, I'm sure the Aussies did just fine, besides the detectors aren't what is going to cause the problem,lol.\m/\m/
